Biography Anthony Bailes
Anthony Bailes studied the classic guitar through which he developed a love for lute music. A chance meeting with Diana Poulton resulted in buying a lute and studying with her. In 1968 he met the Dutch lutenist and harpsichordist, Gusta Goldschmidt who encouraged him to study with Eugen Dombois at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis. In 1971 he was awarded a grant by the Arts Council of Great Britain which enabled him to do so. During these first years in Basel important contacts were made and he began working with Michel Piguet (Baroque oboe and recorder), Jordi Savall (Viola da Gamba) and the singers, Nigel Rogers, Emma Kirkby and James Bowman. From the late 1990’s he decided to devote his energies more to solo performing although he still enjoys the occasional appearance in the role of accompanist. Of his various recordings some are considered “milestones” and his interpretations of seventeenth-century French and German repertoire are particularly esteemed, having been awarded several prizes. His latest recording for the Belgian label Ramée, “ Apollon Orateur”, which is devoted to music by Denis Gaultier, received glowing revues within weeks of being released:
