Info for Lute Music of the Netherlands

Acclaimed English lutenist Anthony Bailes presents on his new album a fine selection of Dutch lute music of the 17th Century, the “Golden Age” of Dutch cultural and artistic history. Despite the lute being of utmost importance in the musical life of that era, most of its music has not survived and it is rarely being played by today’s performers. This is the meaning and importance of this recording: It allows us, like a travel in time, to have a closer look into this fascinating culture and into the work of Dutch lutenists like Vallet, Huwet and especially van den Hove, contemporaries to such well-known artists as Rembrandt, Vermeer, van Eyck and Huygens.

Anthony Bailes studied the classic guitar through which he developed a love for lute music. A chance meeting with Diana Poulton resulted in buying a lute and studying with her. In 1968 he met the Dutch lutenist and harpsichordist, Gusta Goldschmidt who encouraged him to study with Eugen Dombois at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis. In 1971 he was awarded a grant by the Arts Council of Great Britain which enabled him to do so. During these first years in Basel important contacts were made and he began working with Michel Piguet (Baroque oboe and recorder), Jordi Savall (Viola da Gamba) and the singers, Nigel Rogers, Emma Kirkby and James Bowman. From the late 1990’s he decided to devote his energies more to solo performing although he still enjoys the occasional appearance in the role of accompanist. Of his various recordings some are considered “milestones” and his interpretations of seventeenth-century French and German repertoire are particularly esteemed, having been awarded several prizes. His latest recording for the Belgian label Ramée, “ Apollon Orateur”, which is devoted to music by Denis Gaultier, received glowing revues within weeks of being released:

„Um es gleich vorweg zu sagen: Diese CD ist etwas ganz besonderes.“(Klassik.com);

„For anyone wanting a better understanding of the early French Baroque in all its aspects, Apollo Orateur can safely be put to the top of the list.“(Classical Net Review);
