Info for Zukunftsmusik Ostwärts

Travelling in Liszt’s footsteps, the Philharmonisches Orchester Altenburg Gera risked a journey from West to East in 2018 and 2019, performing several symphonic and chamber music works from the rich diversity of Hungarian and Romanian musical landscapes that are largely unfamiliar in the West. In the autumn of 2019, the orchestra embarked on a celebrated concert tour to Timisoara and Bucharest. The ensemble joined forces with the Banatul State Philharmonic Orchestra for performances of Gustav Mahler’s Third Symphony in Gera’s twinned partner-city Timisoara as well as in Gera. In this context, three new commissions were premiered, written by Hungarian and Romanian composers of the present generation: Máté Bella, Balász Horváth and Dan Dediu.

Philharmonisches Orchester Altenburg-Gera
In 2001, six years after the fusion of the Landestheater Altenburg and the stages of the city of Gera to form the Theater Altenburg-Gera, the Landeskapelle Altenburg and the Philharmonic Orchestra Gera were also merged into one ensemble. The focus of the orchestra is in the rich musical tradition of Central Germany, works of composers persecuted by the Nazis, and the classics of the 19th and 20th centuries.

Premieres regularly supplement the repertoire. Radio broadcasts with MDR Figaro and Deutschlandradio Kultur provide for national recognition of the Philharmonic Orchestra Altenburg-Gera.

The Philharmonic Orchestra Altenburg-Gera has also received an excellent reputation for its regular performances in the Dresden Frauenkirche, In addition to renowned soloists such as Bernd Glemser, Gábor Boldoczki, and Martin Funda, highly talented young performers regularly perform with the Philharmonic Orchestra Altenburg-Gera.
