Info for Hamabiwa

The drums of Marius Couvreur and bass of Otto Kint form the beating heart of the album. Each track has its own distinct groove and character, crafted with meticulous attention to detail. Melancholic and intimate acoustic moments contrast beautifully with the energetic, jam-like feel that characterizes the other end of the album’s spectrum. Saxophonist Elias Storme joins guitarist Rebekka Van Bockstal in using effects, enriching the sonic universe even further.

Contrast and layering in the compositions allow the production by Peter Desmedt and the creative possibilities of Studio Ledeberg to take on a key role. The overdubs and the album’s warm atmosphere are a direct result of this close collaboration.

The syllabic word Hamabiwa represents the names of the first-born children from each of the band members’ households. These little ones inspired the themes woven throughout the album. While our children give us endless energy, they also take some of it away — which is why drummer Marius Couvreur will step aside from the quartet. Jesse Dockx will be joining the band, bringing a fresh perspective to the release concerts.

Hamabiwa was born from the musical freedom the band experiences in their rehearsal space — a place where parenthood and daily responsibilities temporarily fade away in favor of pure musical joy. And you can hear that joy in every note. This album is an ode to the child within us all. A musical escape. A journey to a moment where time — just for a little while — seems to stand still.

Rebekka Van Bockstal
(1994, Lier) is a dynamic young guitar player, who gets her inspiration from the many traditions and possibilities jazzmusic offers. While composing her own music, she feels inspired by musicians like Pierre Van Dormael, Robin Verheyen, Lage Lund, Maria Schneider,… In 2012 Rebekka started at the Jazz division of the Conservatory of Ghent. Here she was taught for three years by Hans Van Oost, it was his drive and passion for the music that inspired her and continues to do so until this day. After receiving her bachelor’s degree, Rebekka decided it was time for some change. In 2015 she chose to continue her studies in Brussels and persue her masters degree at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels. Where she attained here Masters degree under the tutelage of Peter Hertmans She got her first live-experience playing with Art Brut 5tet. In 2015 the band got some acknowledgement as a finalist in the ‘Concourse XL Jazz’-competition during the Brussels Jazz Marathon. From 2016 her main musical focus became her own quartet: RVB Quartet. This project gave her the opportunity to share and perform her own compositions for the first time. The band released their first album 'Crossing Dimensions' in 2018 on Solitude Records. In 2017 Rebekka started Tadpole Evolution, this band would become Rebekka’s graduation project at the Brussels Conservatory.
