Info for Rachmaninoff: Symphonies Nos. 2 & 3; Isle of the Dead

To mark the 150th anniversary of one of the most popular of all classical composers, Grammyr-winning conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin and his 'Fabulous Philadelphians' present Rachmaninoff's Symphonies Nos. 2 and 3, and the symphonic poem Isle of the Dead. This release completes their two-part survey of the three symphonies and other major orchestral works and, like the first instalment of 2021, continues to build on the orchestra's incomparable Rachmaninoff legacy.

The double album "Symphonies Nos. 2&3 - Isle Of The Dead" is the crowning finale of the Rachmaninoff orchestral cycle by Yannick Nézet-Séguin with his "Fabulous Philadelphians"! In its review of the previous edition, featuring Symphony No. 1 and Symphonic Dances, Gramophone praised Nézet-Séguin's "ability to fathom the extraordinary legacy around Rachmaninoff and Philadelphia while renewing its startling innovation". All the qualities of the Rachmaninoff/Ormandy era have resurfaced, creating a kind of faded opulence. An all in all stunning album!" This release completes the two-part survey of the three symphonies and other major orchestral works and, like the first instalment of 2021 - an acclaimed recording of Symphony No. 1 and the Symphonic Dances and work with Daniil Trifonov - continues to build on the orchestra's incomparable Rachmaninoff legacy. The Russian pianist and composer first appeared as a soloist with the Fabulous Philadelphians in 1909, played with the orchestra and conducted it several times over the next 34 years, performing his works for piano and orchestra with them and writing his Paganini Rhapsody, Third Symphony and Symphonic Dances with the notorious sound of this unique orchestra in mind.
