Info for The Villain
Following a period of profound personal change and loss, MARGOT began writing The Villain. Recorded live in Colombia, the ten-movement album moves between classical, soundscapes and orchestral music, held together by her singular violin playing: intimate, visceral and constantly evolving.
From childhood through adolescence, MARGOT nurtured an exclusive passion for classical music. She began her violin training at the age of four in the small town in northern Florida where she grew up. At 19, she moved to New York on her own, where—through listening to artists like Radiohead, Sigur Rós, and Björk—she discovered a new way of approaching string instruments.
She quickly became one of the most sought-after studio musicians of her generation, collaborating with artists such as Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, and St. Vincent, all while developing her own unique voice as a composer and producer.
In 2020, a meeting in Colombia with pianist and composer Juan Villacrez marked a decisive turning point. Together, they created the instrumental album "The Apartment on Third Street"—produced by Amazon Music and amassing over 13 million streams—before retreating to Vermont to spend two years working on a new project.
Born out of a period of profound personal upheaval—marked by the loss of both her mother and her father—*The Villain* unfolds as an inward journey in ten movements. Recorded live in Colombia with minimal takes and no overproduction, the album blends neo-classical, jazz, and orchestral elements into a deeply organic, cinematic soundscape. MARGOT’s songwriting and distinctive violin playing lend the album an intimate, moving quality.
