Info for Arias of Love & Sorrow

Gevorg Hakobyan is a rising star on the international operatic stage. His deep, resonant voice brings drama and colour to every aria on this album. Three unusual selections in Armenian – including Mosi’s Aria from Anoush, the most important opera in the Armenian language – enhance this debut recording. Drawing from favorite operas such as Verdi’s Otello and Tchaikovsky’s Queen of Spades, Arias of Love & Sorrow joins recent Delos releases including Oksana Dyka’s In Questa Reggia, Oksana Volkova’s Poison D’Amour and Kristian Benedikt’s Tenore di forza in bringing new and captivating voices to fans of opera.

Looking ahead, Gevorg will make his house debuts at Teatro Filarmonico Verona (Il tabarro) and will return to the Teatro Real Madrid.

Gevorg has appeared at Wiener Staatsoper, Teatro Real Madrid, Liceu Barcelona, de Nationale Opera Amsterdam, Palau de les Arts Valencia, Teatro Carlo Felice Genoa, Bolshoi Theatre Moscow, Mariinsky Theatre, Mikhailovsky Theatre, Nationale Opera Amsterdam, Stuttgart Opera, Terme di Caracalla Roma, Teatro Communale di Bologna, Palau des les Arts Reina Sofia, Teatro Massimo di Palermo, Armenian National Academic Theatre of Opera and Ballet, Hong Kong Cultural Centre, Opera de Lille, Opera di Genova and Teatro Regio di Torino as well as the White Nights Festival St. Petersburg and Savonlinna Festival

He has worked with the following stage directors: Barrie Kosky, Stefano Poda, Robert Carsen, Lydia Steier, Julia Pevzner, Rimas Tuminas, Alice Hegimbashyan, Gegam Grigorian, Mariusz Trelinkski, Marina Bianchi and conductors such as Lorenzo Viotti, Anton Grishanin, Placido Domingo, Daniele Callegari, Axel Kober, Marco Armiliato, Nicola Luisotti, Alexandre Bloch, Jader Bignamini, Dmitri Jurowski, Gennady Rozhdestvensky, Tugan Sokhiev, Daniel Oren, Henrik Nanasi and Oksana Lyniv.

"... tonight a trip through the darkest pages of human thoughts was arranged by the frighteningly demonic Scarpia of Gevorg HAKOBYAN. The Armenian baritone was the most vivid impression that we took with us from this evening. His “Va Tosca” perfectly mixed the ubiquitous influx of negative energy with the divine holiness, and the level of intensity - in the best traditions of theatrical drama - constantly increased. In this case, one could dare to use the phrase "world-class dramatic baritone", and it will be appropriate." (Oper Plus, Martin Kajzar)
