Info for Man On A Mission

Singer, guitarist, and high-voltage showman, Manu Lanvin, has become a driving force in French blues-rock. Over the course of seven albums and more than 900 concerts, he’s taken his fiery performances from L’Olympia in Paris to The Apollo in New York and the Montreux Jazz Festival, earning the praise of legends such as Quincy Jones and Johnny Hallyday along the way. Known for his deep, powerful voice and electrifying guitar work, Lanvin delivers a sound that’s equal parts, grit, and soul.

With ‘Man On A Mission,’ Lanvin presents his most wide-reaching work yet – recorded in Paris, Nashville, Montreal, Fort Lauderdale, and Sheffield. The album is rooted in the blues but freely explores rock, soul, and pop influences, each track revealing the craft of a songwriter and producer at the top of his game. It’s a bold, heartfelt journey shaped by the roads he’s traveled and the stories he’s lived.

“Just Need Me” is a restless rocker that opens the album with screeching wheels and self-discovery. Lanvin trades heartbreak for liberation: “I don’t need no pretty woman / Oh, I just need me.” With gritty guitar textures and a Moog bass undercurrent from Nicolas Bonnière, it’s a highway anthem for the fiercely independent. It’s followed by the soul charged “I Can’t Get Enough of You,” a bittersweet tug-of-war between passion and pain. Even through the turbulence, Lanvin admits, “No matter what you put me through / I can’t get enough of you.” The Haggis Horns bring a brassy punch, driving the song’s irresistible groove.

“Did U See Judy?” is a cinematic blues tale set against the backdrop of New York City. Between uptown trains and Central Park shadows, the search is both romantic and haunted: “Did you see Judy in the city lights? / Someone help me bring my girl back home.” Wurlitzer keys and whistles give it a nostalgic, street-corner swagger. In “Change My Ways,” Lanvin delivers a confessional soulful rocker steeped in regret. His plea is raw: “If I could change my ways, would you still walk away?” The Haggis Horns punctuate the verses with soulful stabs while the rhythm section locks into a relentless pulse.

“I Got the Blues” is a modern blues jam with classic grit – and a wink. Over piano, harmonica, and vinyl scratches, Lanvin lists his woes: “Got the blues where’s my Wi-Fi? / My dear dead mama, can’t even get by.” It’s a clever mix of tradition and humor, wrapped in a groove that’s impossible not to tap along to. The tender “Savigny-Sur-Orge” is a horn-tinged ballad doused in personal history. Lanvin paints vivid childhood scenes – candy stores, cathedral steps – before delivering the poignant refrain: “Mama, it’s time to leave Savigny behind.”

The title track “Man On A Mission” is the spiritual centerpiece. Co-written with Craig Walker, it’s a declaration of purpose – “I’m a man on a mission, no I don’t need no permission” – delivered with fire and conviction. The album closes with French lyrics, on “Une Nuit,” where Lanvin offers a final, vulnerable plea: “Donne-moi… encore… une nuit.” It’s tender and nostalgic and wraps the record with a warm afterglow. – Davis Coen

Manu Lanvin
one of France’s leading blues-rock voices, began his career with three rock albums (2000–2006) before finding his true sound with ‘The Devil Blues.’ A turning point came in 2009 when he co-wrote and produced Texan legend Calvin Russell’s final album Dawg Eat Dawg, steering him closer towards the blues.

His 2012 release Mauvais Casting sparked rapid success, leading to over 120 shows in 2013 across international stages. Lanvin went on to represent France at the 2014 International Blues Challenge in Memphis and won the 2015 Cognac Blues Passions Prize.

In 2016, he released ‘Blues, Booze, and Rock ‘n’ Roll,’ hailed as one of the year’s best albums by Le Parisien, earning him a nomination for “Best Male Performer” at the Globes de Cristal.

Lanvin embodies the grit of a bluesman with the heart of a rock ‘n’ roll optimist. His last album, ‘Grand Casino,’ is a blues and rock ‘n’ roll celebration featuring duets with Taj Mahal, Beverly Jo Scott, Johnny Gallagher, Popa Chubby, and Paul Personne.

Lanvin collaborated on an exciting project with his highly regarded father and famous actor, Gérard Lanvin, for whom he produced one of the most successful French albums of 2021, Ici-Bas. He also honored his songwriting mentor and friend in 2024, with the stunning album, Tribute to Calvin Russell. Notably, every album that Manu has released has reached #1 in the French Blues Charts.
