Info for Rays of Winter Sun (EP)

"I spend a lot of time travelling in the snow in winter," says Nils Wülker, "I like the feeling of freezing cold." With "Rays of Winter Sun", the trumpeter is releasing an EP this Friday (10 November) that captures the peaceful mood of a walk through snow-covered landscapes. In a trio with bassist Sven Faller and pianist Tim Allhoff, Wülker has created a calm antithesis to the hectic pace of everyday life. The title track is already available and can be listened to below.

Wülker has written four new songs for the EP, plus his own arrangement of the hymn "Macht Hoch die Tür" and a cover of a song by Thad Jones.

"'A Child is Born' is a standard that you can play all year round," says Wülker, "that was important to me, because I didn't want to simply record well-known Christmas songs. I was more interested in getting into a reflective mood. It doesn't have to be winter for that."

Nils Wülker is an enthusiastic mountaineer, but above all he is one of Germany's most successful jazz musicians. He recently released "Continuum" with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, which the Süddeutsche Zeitung described as "world-class jazz", and the duo album "Closer" with guitarist Arne Jansen ("A bath of beautiful sounds" according to TTT). Wülker's songs are often groove-orientated, combining hip-hop, pop and electronic music. "Rays of Winter Sun" is the antithesis: stripped down, acoustic, no frills.

The bowed double bass in "Northern Lights" brings to mind the threatening cold of an icy day, before the first rays of sun break through the clouds with Wülker's warm trumpet tone. "First Sight of Snow" spreads melancholy lightness - for Wülker, the song represents the memory of watching the first snow fall as a child.

The EP "Rays of Winter Sun" creates a contemplative end-of-year mood that wraps itself around the body like a warm cloak - the perfect soundtrack for cold winter evenings.
