Info for Noskowski & Żeleński: Violin Sonatas

Both Zygmunt Noskowski and Władysław Żeleński were leading representatives of Polish nationalism in the last quarter of the 19th century. Noskowski is primarily known as a symphonist, but his large-scale Violin Sonata in A minor is an impressive work that reveals the influence of both Beethoven's Kreutzer Sonata and Brahms.

Żeleński was as important a pedagogue as he was a composer. With works such as his opera Janek (jpc 11473660), he attempted to broaden the provincial view of Poland. His Violin Sonata in F major is typical of the essentially conservative idiom that Żeleński pursued in his mature period.
