Info for Making Memories
Vana Gierig newest album is called “Making Memories.” Vana is one of New York’s premier jazz pianists and composers. His award-winning, virtuosic performance style and musical direction has been recognized worldwide and has been integral to many international tours and recordings, including collaborations with Ute Lemper, Regina Carter, Eddie Gomez, Lena Horne, among many others.
This album represents the culmination of his recent writing for his trio, as well as for special guest Paquito D’Rivera. Paquito is the winner of nine GRAMMY Awards, he is celebrated both for his artistry in Latin jazz and his achievements as a classical composer. For the past 3 years, Vana and Paquito have created a special musical program consisting of Vana’s award winning compositions, as well as newly inspired works. Paquito has been a special guest on numerous international concerts with Vana, and this is the first recording which documents their special rapport, solidifying the musical memories made between both artists. While his trio is always the core of his sound, Vana also expands the colors to include some writing for violin, cello, and naturally, Paquito’s clarinet.
'Making Memories' is about the importance of creating good memories in life. They don't just happen, but we have to actively do something to ‘make’ them, since they will stay with us for the rest of our lives, continuing to shape, change, and enrich us,” says Vana about his new album 'Making Memories'.
“Vana Gierig feels sure enough of his abilities to compose songful, optimistic melodies and subject them to subtle yet ingenious transformations.” (Andrew Malone, JazzTimes)
