Info for 4630 Bochum (40 Jahre Edition)

"4630 Bochum" by Herbert Grönemeyer - a milestone in music history.

A spectacular anniversary in pop culture casts its shadow ahead. May marks the 40th anniversary of the (vinyl) release of "4630 Bochum" by Herbert Grönemeyer. Reason enough for an artistic exploration of one of the most successful German albums of all time, which has sold more than 3 million copies and continues to win gold records to this day.

We start with rapper and singer Céline, who has set herself the task of reinterpreting the song "Flugzeuge Im Bauch". A 23-year-old's take on the iconic single from 1984 leads to a sensitive R'n'B concentrate. A self-confident reworking. Consistently and contemporarily realised as a 2024 track, in collaboration with Herbert Grönemeyer.

The album box set celebrating 40 years of "4630 Bochum" takes a look back to the future with a 2024 remix of the original album and interpretations by a new generation of musicians. On an album that combines the sensitivities of the Federal Republic of Germany with studio technology in the analogue age: How well have the sound and lyrics held up; how is a new generation interpreting the legendary songs?

We can look forward to further musical reinterpretations by well-known artists.

Musically, Grönemeyer was still pretty unsuccessful up until the release of his fifth album "4630 Bochum". He had already recorded four albums with his record company at the time, but these met with little interest, so Intercord finally cancelled his contract. EMI then signed him to a contract and "4630 Bochum" was recorded in their studios in Cologne between January and March 1984.

"4630 Bochum" - the big breakthrough for Grönemeyer

"4630 Bochum" is Herbert Grönemeyer's big breakthrough, not only commercially but also artistically. He had found his style, he had found himself and also his band, most of whom he still plays with today.

"It's also one of those albums that redefined German-language rock music, or at least part of it." (SWR1 music editor, Benjamin Brendebach)
