Info for EUROPEAN TOUR

It is common to date the beginning of the Renaissance to the mid-14th century. From the ashes of the Black Death emerged a society that was fundamentally changed, and to a large extent saw itself as re-born – formed anew. It cannot be a coincidence that this transformation first took place in the very parts of Europe that had been at the centre of the Roman Empire when at its strongest, in Italy. Florence became the main powerhouse of the new Europe, and from there the Renaissance spread rapidly, bringing an intense cultural flowering to France, England, the Netherlands, Germany and Spain. It is from these countries that Nordic Brass Ensemble has assembled the repertoire for "European Tour" – music arranged specially for this ensemble by Hans Petter Stangnes and Stian Aareskjold. Modern brass instruments have a history going back to the Janissaries, the Ottoman sultan’s special military corps. Contact between Renaissance Europe and Islamic culture helped determine how European culture, and in particular its music, would develop in this period. Nordic Brass Ensemble is made up of musicians from symphony orchestras and wind ensembles in the Nordic countries, and it has always played early music.

„Outstanding is a word that some would agree is overused in the English language, but it describes this group perfectly. It is a joy to watch as several different members led the group at various times during a performance from their respective musical chairs.” (Gary Mortenson, International Trumpet Guild Journal)

„Brass sound of top-class brilliance and musicality, garnished with tastefully applied percussion: This is the trademark of Nordic Brass.” (Sandra Blass, Nordbayerischer KURIER)

Nordic Brass Ensemble

Nordic Brass Ensemble
The Nordic Brass Ensemble was founded in 1993 by a group of brass musicians who felt inspired to make chamber music together.

The ensemble has, since its beginning, focussed greatly on developing its own musical ideas and concepts of sound. By thoroughly exploring all the different instruments’ special qualities, combining them in new and unusual ways, as well as extensively using mutes, special instruments and percussion to create new colours and effects, the ensemble continuously develops the distinct sound of NBE.

NBE has a vast repertoire, spanning from the renaissance to our own time. Early music has always been an important part of that repertoire, and the ensemble is soon to release a CD containing only music from this period.

Most of the repertoire is arranged exclusively for the ensemble by NBE members Hans Petter Stangnes, Erik Eilertsen and Stian Aareskjold.

The musicians of NBE live in different parts of Scandinavia, and meet for projects about twice a year. NBE performs regularly in the Nordic countries, and has in recent years also visited Germany, Italy, Austria, Spain and Bolivia.

NBE normally consists of 11 musicians; 4 trumpets, 4 trombones, horn, tuba and percussion.
