Info for Piccinini: Works for Archlute

Lutenist Rosario Conte plays works for archlute solo by father and son Piccinini

In his new solo archlute recital, the Italian lutenist Rosario Conte plays works by Alessandro Piccinini and his son, Leonardo Maria Piccinini, in a most virtuosic and emotional interpretation. This recording offers an excitingly fresh view on Italian 17th Century repertoire (the pieces of this CD were published in 1623 and 1639). It does not only show the complexity and difficulty of the compositions, but rather discloses their deep beauty and grace, thus revealing the true humanistic background of this outstanding musical era.

Rosario Conte, Archlute

Recorded 2011 in the Convent of the Annunciation in Rovato, Italy.

Rosario Conte was born in 1966 in Taranto. He started his musical education by studying the violin and guitar and then turned towards period plucked instruments and historically informed performance. He studied baroque guitar, lute, theorbo and basso continuo at the “N. Piccinni” Conservatoire in Bari and received his diplomas in guitar and lute with the highest distinction.

From 2002 to 2004, he studied with Hopkinson Smith at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis (CH) and since then has lived in Basel. Aside from his intensive concert, solo and continuo playing careers, he also participates in a number of different ensembles and orchestras which specialise in the playing of period instruments, such as the Kammerorchester Basel, the Accademia Bizantina, the Balthasar-Neumann Ensemble, and the Freiburger Barockorchester. He also regularly performs at different Early Music Festivals.

Rosario Conte has recorded for various major record labels, such as Deutsche Grammophon and Sony, as well as for numerous radio stations. Since 2007 he has been professor of lute, theorbo, baroque guitar and basso continuo at the “N. Piccinni” Conservatoire in Bari.
