Innocence is the soundtrack to Guy Davidi's powerful documentary film of the same name. The film is a harrowing insight into what it's like to grow up in a heavily militarized state where military service isn't only compulsory, but is seen as a moral and cultural obligation as well. Focusing on the inner conflicts and often tragic fates of young people who dared to resist, the film is an extremely timely reminder of the devastatingly dehumanizing effects of militarization in a global sense. In his score, Hallgrímsson blends an intimate felted upright piano and the beautifully tragic quality of the string quartet with the emotional weight of the full orchestra – underlining the contrast between the tender innocence of a child, and the bleak reality that awaits it. Stylistically simple but emotionally complex, this soundtrack album leaves no one untouched.
