Info for Arnold Schönberg: Friede auf Erden – Richard Strauss & Gustav Mahler: Transcriptions by Clytus Gottwald
Frieder Bernius and his Kammerchor Stuttgart are releasing the album they recorded for our partner label Carus. It contains choral arrangements of various works by Richard Strauss, Arnold Schönberg and Gustav Mahler.
The arranger Clytus Gottwald (1925-2023), apostrophised by music critics as the ‘father’ of modern choral singing, possessed the special gift of translating the most diverse vocal-soloistic-instrumental compositions for solo voice and instrumental accompaniment into a pure, polyphonic choral sound.
At the centre of the album are the choral arrangements of ten different songs by Richard Strauss as well as a breathtaking 16-part transcription of the Adagietto from Gustav Mahler's 5th Symphony. The recording also includes the original composition Friede auf Erden, one of the few choral works of the Second Viennese School, released on 13 September to mark Arnold Schoenberg's 150th birthday.
