In recent years there have been many revisions of classical works in the key of jazz, but Lluis Capdevila proposes an approach based on a concept that I personally find more interesting than that of revision, "revisit", which literally means to reconsider an idea, a work or an author, sometimes with a new approach. An idea that runs perfectly through the work that this experienced Catalan pianist presents on his new album, Mompou Revisited Intimate Impressions.

Federico Mompou was an excellent composer from Barcelona who moved to Paris on the recommendation of Enrique Granados, until he returned to his homeland after the outbreak of the First World War, although he returned to the French capital in 1941, fleeing from Franco's regime. On his return from Paris in 1914, he composed some of his best works, such as the one Capdevila revisits, his Impresiones Íntimas. The work presented here is an extensive work in which Mompou's delicate and intimate -impressionist- style adopts a new approach, without, however, losing its essence. Throughout the eleven themes, classical resources are nimbly combined with hot elements, with the double bass lines standing out in these, which support solos of an openly jazzy character, serving as a development of the themes and melodies, sometimes presented in the form of a block chord and at other times respecting the sobriety of the original compositions. The proposed approach perpetuates that, in general, the intimate and subtle exposition of the original compositions is prolonged.

One virtue I find in this work is that Capdevila has managed to maintain his style and sound despite revisiting the work of another composer, a perfect syncretism between two sensibilities which, on the other hand, have proved to be compatible.es original.

Lluís Capdevila
(1981) grew up in the Priorat vineyards on the Mediterranean Sea (Catalonia, north-east Spain). From an early age, freedom of expression and creativity connected him with music, composition and improvisation in such a way that, although he studied Law (Barcelona) and Master's in Property Law Intellectual (Stockholm), he abandoned this path to focus exclusively on music. Jazz brought him to New York, with the help of a Fulbright scholarship, where he studied at the Aaron Copland School and earned a master's degree in jazz performance, although he continued his musical training and received the doctorate in musical arts. Graduated from Stony Brook University. In New York City he has collaborated with established musicians and emerging talents in various settings. Diaspora (2016) is his debut album and features original compositions inspired by his experiences in New York and the dispersion of his generation, as many left their home country in search of job opportunities.Petros Klampanis (bass) and Luca Santaniello (drums) joined him in a piano trio recording that has received excellent reviews in the United States and Spain, and left more than fifty concerts. Daybreak Explorations (2018) is a selection of solo piano improvisations recorded at the Staller Center for the Arts. Ràdio Cinematogràfica (2019) presents his original music in a more intimate setting with Petros Klampanis (bass, loops and percussion) and features the stellar collaboration of Tom Harrell (flugelhorn) on one melody. Étim (2020) is his first solo piano studio album and presents music from his roots while he composed the music for seven months in the Catedral del Vi de Falset (Priorat), on a grand piano surrounded by wine in barrels and bottles. With Social (2021), Capdevila presents his New York trio in an album that combines original compositions and arrangements of classic jazz standards. Joe Lovano joins the trio to record the original composition 'East Broadway'.
