Info for Forgotten Pearls

Toyohiko Sato's New Recording! A new recording by Toyohiko Sato, one of the world's leading lutenists and the pride of Japan, on his own label "Nostalgia". Toyohiko Sato has been recording mainly Baroque music since his encounter with "Lorenz [Laurentius] Greif," a rare original Baroque lute made in 1611, but this album is music from the Renaissance period. This is a wonderful program of "forgotten pearls," that is, small pieces of unknown authorship from the Renaissance period that are lovely, beautiful, and fun from European countries. The pieces were originally written for different instruments, such as the 6-, 7-, 8-, and 10-course lute and the bihuela, but this recording does not place the highest priority on historical performance, but rather allows those who play the lute for pleasure to play some of the pieces on this album, regardless of which type of Renaissance lute (or bihuela) they have. The idea is that anyone who plays lute for pleasure can play some of the pieces on this album on any type of Renaissance lute (or bihuela), so only one 10-course lute is used. Of course, gut strings are used. The booklet features a special section titled "The Lute in Paintings," which includes various paintings from the 16th and 17th centuries in which the lute is depicted.
