Info for Lassus: Io ti vorria contar... Transcriptions for Lute

In that apogee of polyphonic vocal music, the 16th century, Roland de Lassus (Mons c. 1532-Munich 1594) is pre-eminent. So famous was he that by the time he was 34, Samuel Quickelberg had already written the biography of "the more than divine Orlando", as the poet Ronsard called Lassus, and as early as 1560 had praised the fact that he regarded music and words as of equal importance. But beyond his mastery of polyphonic language, what clearly characterises Lassus is his ability to feel at home in all styles whether secular or sacred, serious or light-hearted. His impressive oeuvre, confined to the vocal domain, reveals a conception of music, which had long been cloistered and hierarchical. But the lute is an exceptional instrument with numerous special advantages: it is convenient to handle, easily transported, and able to play alone to accompany music in several parts at once; it can accompany singing or fit easily into ensembles. Thanks to its polyphonic capabilities, the lute can combine separately printed voice parts into vocal editions. Being the instrument of musical synthesis, the lute points the way to the development of instrumental music. In the Renaissance, lute music is divided into three groups: dance music, polyphonic vocal works in tablature form, and freer forms of music (fantasias or ricercars) often based on the same contrapuntal rules as vocal music. The recital in this album illustrates all these different genres.

Evangelina Mascardi
is considered one of the most prominent lute players on the international scene.

Born in Buenos Aires in 1977, she graduated in classical guitar and started her concert career as a highly gifted young soloist.

In 1997 she moved to Europe to study with Hopkinson Smith at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis (Basel, Switzerland), where she obtained her “Solisten Diplom” in 2001.

During the last decade she collaborated regularly as a continuo-player with Jordi Savall (Hespèrion XXI), Marc Minkowsky (Les Musiciens du Louvre), Andrea Marcon (Venice Baroque Orchestra), Giovanni Antonini (Giardino Armonico), Chiara Banchini (415), Simon Rattle (Berliner Philarmoniker). With them and other ensembles she took part in more than 30 recordings.

Nowadays, she confines her collaboration to Ensemble Zefiro (Alfredo Bernardini) and Monteverdi Choir (Sir John Eliot Gardiner), in order to mainly focus on solo lute repertoire.

Constantly praised by critics, she has performed recitals in a number of early music festivals such as Fringe (Barcellona), Concentus (Brno), Resonanzen (Vienna), Luth et Theorbe (Genêve), Early Music Festival (London), Musica Antigua Festival (Daroca), Forum Musicum (Breslau), and guitar festivals in Madrid, Treviso, Santander, Castell’Arquato, Pordenone and Novara.

Evangelina has four solo albums to her credit, two devoted to Johann Sebastian Bach and Sylvius Leopold Weiss (ORF-Alte Musik, Austria 2003 and 2009), one to refined and original theorbo solos by the Modena-born Bellerofonte Castaldi (Arcana 2011) and the latest recently devoted to the Belgian lutenist and composer Laurent de Saint-Luc (Musique en Wallonie 2018).

Evangelina teaches Lute at the ISSM ”Conservatorio A. Vivaldi" in Alessandria (Italy).

Since 2020 Evangelina is a member of the Scientific Commette of the Convegno internazionale di chitarra (Milan) and since 2021 of the Directive Board of the Italian Lute Society.
