“ICONS 2” is the follow-up collection to my 2017 “ICONS” recording. Like the first collection, the pieces included here are corner stones of the flute repertoire and are works that accompany me through my performance and teaching career.

For this album, I have focused on six composers from various moments in the 20th and 21st centuries whose diverse musical language, artistic vision and fearlessness helped and help shape today’s musical landscape. These six composers are led in by one of the most important names in Western Classical music history: Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach.

Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach’s solo flute sonata in A Minor stands firm amongst the most significant works for the flute. Written in 1747 and published in 1763 as Sonata per il Flauto traverso solo senza Basso, the sonata looked forward stylistically to the new era of the early classical epoch. Although it is equal in scope to his father’s solo flute partita (which is also in A Minor and had been written more than 20 years earlier), CPE Bach’s sonata is more lyrical and dramatic. He writes large leaps and quick dynamic contrasts to create an intensely expressive and dramatic mood. Unfortunately for flutists, the gallant style that was ushered in by CPE Bach’s contemporaries, saw the solo flute sonata’s loss of popularity which lasted for a long time.
