Info for Deus Arrakis

For more than 50 years, the composer, musician and producer Klaus Schulze has been rolling out his enormous sound carpets, playing his famous sequences and creating that unique 'Schulze atmosphere' - his 'Musique Planante'.

With "Deus Arrakis", the electronic legend now presents his new studio album.

Klaus Schulze's collaboration with Hans Zimmer for the Oscar-winning soundtrack to the remake of the classic film 'Dune' has brought him back to desert fever. "I needed more of that 'Spice'," Schulze recounts. "Then there was no stopping me, I just played and played... and at the end of my second, again very private 'Dune' journey, I realised: 'Deus Arrakis' is another salute to Frank Herbert and, by extension, to the great gift of life."

Since his beginnings in bands like 'Tangerine Dream' and 'Ash Ra Tempel' or in his over 50 solo albums from 'Irrlicht' to Mirage', 'X' and 'Dune' to 'Farscape', 'Kontinuum', 'Silhouettes' and now 'Deus Arrakis', in his productions under the pseudonym 'Richard Wahnfried' or the numerous film scores and collaborations with artists like Arthur Brown, Michael Shrieve, Rainer Bloss, Lisa Gerrard or most recently Hans Zimmer: Klaus Schulze has always remained true to his unmistakable way of creating music and yet always remained open to the new, the innovative, the experimental.

About 'Deus Arrakis' Klaus Schulze himself says: "On the one hand, the album came about as spontaneously as ever, but on the other hand it somehow has a special prehistory: When I made my eleventh album 'Dune' in 1979, I already knew the 'Dune' trilogy by heart like some people know their 'Lord of the Rings'.

I was completely captivated by the monumental story of the desert planet and read the books over and over again at that time. Then I got Arthur (Brown) and Wolfgang (Tiepold) into the studio and virtually created my own musical 'Dune'. And with the title 'Frank Herbert' on the previous album 'X', I wanted to express my appreciation to this great author. After the later and, for me, rather unsatisfactory film adaptations of 'Dune', the subject naturally slipped increasingly out of focus and then fell into oblivion for me again for a long time. Until I read about 40 years later that a new film version with Denis Villeneuve was planned - this struck a nerve with me unexpectedly after all these years. I finally got back on the couch with the old books and even the David Lynch version of 'Dune' and completely drifted off again.

I read a lot, I have time! I didn't play music again until a while later and didn't even consciously think about 'Dune'. Months later, the phone suddenly rang - and Lisa (Gerrard) practically put Hans (Zimmer) in my hand. The two have known each other for a long time and Hans wanted to ask for a cooperation - for exactly this 'Dune' remake by Denis Villeneuve! We hit it off immediately - Hans is just as fanatical a 'Dune' fan as I am - and the result really did end up in the film.

It's crazy how circles sometimes open, overlap and close again. Anyway, desert fever had broken out in me again and I needed more of that 'Spice'. So I went back to the studio and found another cello by Wolfgang Tiepold. Then there was no stopping me, I just played and played... and at the end of my second, again very private 'Dune' journey, I realised: 'Deus Arrakis' is another salute to Frank Herbert and, by extension, to the great gift of life."
