Info for A Complicated Woman
Self Esteem returns with her third studio album, A Complicated Woman. It's a big, bold and poptastic statement. A Complicated Woman is her first album since the Brit and Mercury-nominated Prioritise Pleasure – crowned The Guardian and Sunday Times Culture’s Album of the Year.
Critically acclaimed artist Rebecca Lucy Taylor, better known as Self Esteem, has announced her highly-anticipated new album 'A Complicated Woman', set to release on the 25th April. The follow-up to her BRIT and Mercury Prize-nominated 2021 LP 'Prioritise Pleasure', this record promises a bolder, brighter evolution of her signature sound and unflinching lyricism.
Building on the raw honesty and anthemic power of 'Prioritise Pleasure', 'A Complicated Woman' takes Self Esteem’s unique storytelling and artistic vision to exhilarating new heights. The album features her hallmark intricate narratives, dissecting the complexities of modern womanhood while celebrating resilience and self-empowerment. Central to the album is a soaring choir of voices—mostly female—composed of Taylor’s close friends, bandmates, and collaborators. This vibrant vocal ensemble includes singer-songwriters Nadine Shah, Moonchild Sanelly, and Sue Tompkins of Life Without Buildings, as well as drag queen Meatball and actress Julie Hesmondhalgh. Together, they create a sonic tapestry that underscores the themes of connection and community.
The album’s lead single 'Focus Is Power' encapsulates the record’s ethos of taking charge of one’s destiny. The song’s poignant lyrics—originally penned by Taylor on a sticker during the pandemic—transform into a triumphant mantra. The accompanying music video, directed by long-time collaborator Piers Dennis, showcases a heartfelt community hall performance, reflecting the song’s message of shared strength and empowerment.
