Info for Contemplation Suite
Brede Sørum is an up-and-coming saxophonist from Norway. Despite his young age, he has released several albums and played with prominent Norwegian figures such as Paal Nilsen Love, Ingebrigt Håker Flaten, Håkon Mjåset Johansen, and Guro Moe. He also co-leads several active bands, including Schemes, TOG, and When I Return, and has performed with bands such as Cosmic Swing Orchestra, Nye Norske Storband, and Trøndelag Big Band. Brede is a promising saxophonist with many projects spanning various genres, and regardless of what he plays, he brings his powerful energy, passion, and beautiful melodies with him.
With his new quartet, he aims to delve deep into the jazz tradition following the Coltrane legacy and attempt to transfer its essence to the alto saxophone, while also putting his own modern twist on it. With a band consisting of some of Norway's finest young jazz musicians, the group plays intense and heartfelt music with love, sincerity, and respect for the roots of the music.

Brede Sørum Quartet
is a new, exciting, and uncompromising band led by the up-and-coming Norwegian saxophonist Brede Sørum.
The young quartet offers acoustic music that bubbles with pure youthful energy, but with a maturity and musical surplus comparable to experienced titans. This is music that both breathes and explodes, always with an extra gear ready to kick in.
Sørum has invited some of Norway's most exciting young musicians in jazz and improvisational music to join his quartet. They craft their music with clear inspirations from the innovations of 1960s modal jazz and spiritual music. The quartet aims to honor this tradition while consciously looking forward and honing their unique sound.
The band recently released their first album, "SPIRIT," on Øra Fonogram. The album is a suite consisting of four movements, transitioning from darkness to light, from cloudiness to clarity. The suite was recorded in one take, showcasing a very mature quartet. It also stands as a strong documentation of the musicians here and now, the quartet itself, and their exploration of creativity and endurance over time. The vision behind the suite is for it to act as a catalyst for a meditative state in the musicians, to hopefully reach the core of their musicality - allowing them to free themselves from body and mind, and be present in the moment and the music.
"Sørum leads his quartet with a charismatic, commanding voice and marks himself as a promising creative force to reckon with." - Eyal Hareuveni (salt-peanuts.eu)
"(It is) almost unnatural what enormous maturity they show both in the collective expression and as soloists or individualists." - Tor Hammerø (nettavisen.no)
"This band will set any jazz club on fire" - Audun Vinger (Jazznytt)
