Info for Ignaz Brüll: Violin Sonatas

“Mr Brüll is Vienna’s Gounod; his cardinal virtue is musical charm,” remarked the reviewer of the *Wiener Salonblatt* in November 1889 following the successful premiere of a new violin sonata. The man thus “honoured” is unlikely to have been particularly thrilled, having spent nearly a decade and a half earnestly striving, by various means, to match the great success of the opera *Das goldene Kreuz* (*The Golden Cross*), which had brought him international acclaim in Berlin in December 1875. Yet the popular pianist (Brahms, for instance, enjoyed playing duets with him) and composer—as diligent as he was respected—was no creative ‘show-off’, but an extraordinarily sensitive, rather introverted character who rewards only truly attentive listeners – though he does so, of course, with a wealth of dramatic emotion and subtle beauty, as exemplified by the idyllic suite and the middle movements of his four violin sonatas. The mindfulness so often invoked today becomes a reality here.

Mark Gothoni, violin
Gottlieb Wallisch, piano

Mark Gothoni
is from Finland and studied with Ana Chumachenco, Shmuel Ashkenasi, and Sandor Végh. After winning prizes at international competitions, he began his versatile concert career with the distinction “Debut of the Year” at the Finnish Jyväskylä Arts Festival. As a soloist and chamber musician, he has gained recognition on all continents, performing in major concert halls such as the Berlin Philharmonie, Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Lincoln Center New York, Wigmore Hall London, and Kioi Hall Tokyo, as well as at festivals ranging from Kuhmo in Finland to the Casals Festival in Puerto Rico.

Since 2004, he has been first violin of the Orpheus Quartet and a member of the Mozart Piano Quartet, with which he holds an exclusive recording contract with MDG – Dabringhaus & Grimm. From 1996 to 2004, he served as concertmaster with orchestras including the Munich and Zurich Chamber Orchestras. From 2004 to 2008, he was Musical Director of the European Union Chamber Orchestra.

His teaching career has included positions at McGill University in Montreal and the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, before being appointed Professor of Violin at the University of the Arts Berlin. He also gives masterclasses worldwide, including at the Tokyo University of the Arts, Liceo in Barcelona, Western University of Ontario, and Campos do Jordão, Brazil.

From 1998 to 2011, Gothoni was artistic director of the “Festivo” Music Festival in Rauma, Finland. Since 2001, he has led the chamber music courses at the Savonlinna Music Academy.

Gottlieb Wallisch
Born in Vienna, Gottlieb Wallisch first appeared on the concert platform when he was seven years old, and at the age of twelve made his debut in the Golden Hall of the Vienna Musikverein. Among the teachers who influenced his musical direction were Heinz Medjimorec, Pascal Devoyon, and Oleg Maisenberg.

A concert directed by Yehudi Menuhin launched Wallisch’s international career: accompanied by the Sinfonia Varsovia, the seventeen-year-old pianist performed Beethoven’s ‘Emperor’ Concerto. Since then Wallisch has received invitations to the world’s most prestigious concert halls and festivals: Carnegie Hall New York, Wigmore Hall in London, the Cologne Philharmonie, the Tonhalle in Zurich, and the NCPA in Beijing, also the Ruhr Piano Festival, the Beethovenfest in Bonn, the Festivals of Lucerne and Salzburg, the December Nights in Moscow, and the Singapore Arts Festival. Conductors with whom he has performed as a soloist include Giuseppe Sinopoli, Sir Neville Marriner, Dennis Russell Davies, Kirill Petrenko, Louis Langrée, Lawrence Foster und Bruno Weil.

The list of famous orchestras he has performed with includes the Vienna Philharmonic, Vienna Symphony Orchestra, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra, Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra, BBC Symphony Orchestra of Wales, Festival Strings Lucerne, and the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra. He has made many recordings for labels such as LINN records, Deutsche Grammophon and Alpha Classics. In 2012 Steinway & Sons added his name to their roster of “Steinway Artists”.

Alongside his performances on the modern piano, in recent years Gottlieb Wallisch has also intensively studied the field of historic interpretation on early pianos, which has led to collaborations e.g. with Christopher Hogwood and the Camerata Salzburg, the Musica Angelica Baroque Orchestra Los Angeles, and the Orchester Wiener Akademie directed by Martin Haselböck. In 2020 Gottlieb Wallisch released a 3-CD-set with the Complete Beethoven Piano Concertos, performed on instruments from Beethoven’s time. This recording has been nominated for the Opus Klassik 2021 Award.
