Info for From All Sides (Remastered 2026)

Pianist Vince Guaraldi and Brazilian guitarist Bola Sete first met during a stay at the Trois Couleurs club in San Francisco – a fateful encounter that led to a fruitful creative partnership that ultimately combined West Coast jazz with bossa nova and Afro-Brazilian rhythms.

Recorded in 1964, the album ‘From All Sides’ was the duo's second collaboration (there were three in total) and is considered one of their most relaxed and cheerful works. The album is effortless and escapist, gliding from a feather-light interpretation of ‘The Girl from Ipanema’ to the spirited gallop of ‘Ballad of Poncho Villa’.

While Guaraldi is best known for his timeless Peanuts soundtracks, long-time listeners will recognise melodic threads that later reappeared in that beloved universe. Adaptations of the wistful ‘Menino Pequeno da Bateria’ (later reworked as ‘Little Drummer Boy’) and the light-hearted ‘Choro’ would later appear on A Charlie Brown Christmas (1965) and He's Your Dog, Charlie Brown (1968), respectively.

"Across the album, the key strength is balance. Guaraldi doesn’t treat Sete as a sideman, and Sete doesn’t function as background texture. The arrangements are straightforward, the performances controlled, and the focus stays on tight ensemble playing rather than extended solos. For listeners who know Guaraldi mainly from his Peanuts work, From All Sides highlights his interest in rhythm and collaboration. At the same time, it showcases Bola Sete’s ability to shape an entire session through feel and precision. The result is a direct, well-constructed record that still holds up on the strength of its playing alone." (Joey Willis, glidemagazine.com)
