Info for CRASH!

You can really hear that *Crash!* was recorded in Suzi Quatro’s backyard. Not because it sounds like glam rock—but because it captures the charm of a band that simply locked itself away far from sterile studios, cranked up the amps, and just started playing. Two sheds, hardly any soundproofing, a drum kit that sounds so open and clanging as if it were right there in the rehearsal room.

Produced by frontman Jordan Cardy, bassist Harry Todd Booth, and Rancid mastermind Tim Armstrong, the album deliberately avoids digital polish. Every track clangs, rumbles, and comes alive.

The 18 songs are bursting with energy and constantly bridge the gap between youthful carefreeness and the first clashes with growing up. At times, snotty street punk with a distinct RANCID influence dominates; at others, Britpop melodies, ska offbeats, or indie rock hooks shine through. Rat Boy remain wonderfully irreverent throughout, switching seemingly effortlessly between high-school sass, working-class attitude, and more thoughtful moments.

It’s the solid production in particular that gives *Crash!* its special appeal. The drums boom vividly from the speakers, the guitars cut through with a wonderfully raw sound, and Cardy’s vocals often sound as if they’re about to fall apart at any moment—that’s exactly what makes the record authentic. Nothing sounds polished or calculated; instead, it sounds like a band that wanted to capture the perfect moment rather than the perfect take.

With its 18 tracks, *Crash!* does get a bit long-winded in places, but the sheer joy of playing carries it through the 2 1/2 minutes. Rat Boy aren’t winning any innovation awards, but they’re delivering an album full of heart and soul that blends punk rock, ska, and high school pop-punk into a delightfully chaotic mixtape. It’s precisely this unpretentious chaos that makes *Crash!* such a fun album.

RAT BOY
is the genre-hopping vision of Essex songwriter and producer Jordan Cardy, whose scrappy storytelling and sharp wit turn suburban boredom, late-night bus rides, and small-town chaos into vivid, hook-filled anthems. Fusing punk energy, hip hop rhythms, and lo-fi indie textures, he builds a world that feels like a collage of pirate radio, skate videos, and bedroom demos, then pushes it onto the biggest stages with restless ambition. From the cut-and-paste sprawl of his debut album ‘SCUM’ to the sun-bleached, ska-punk charge of ‘INTERNATIONALLY UNKNOWN’ and beyond, RAT BOY has carved out a singular lane, championing underdogs and outsiders with songs that are as catchy as they are cinematic, and a live show that feels like a rowdy house party set to erupt at any moment.
