Info for Next: New Directions

The Reno Jazz Orchestra presents their sixth full-length album, produced by Mike Eardley of Tanglewood Productions, who provided his creative mixing, editing and mastering of the original music by members of the RJO.

The Reno Jazz Orchestra’s “New Directions” project is a look into the future of jazz orchestras. How will they look and sound in the near future? Directed by composer/trumpeter Julien Knowles, the sixteen-piece ensemble consists of musicians of all ages and musical backgrounds, with diverse musical careers that span jazz, pop, classical, and more. Knowles reflects this in his writing, as the ensemble plays a repertoire of the past, present, and future: Billy Joel, Lyle Mays, Sufjan Stevens, and Knowles himself, to name a few. Members of the ensemble include GRAMMY Nominated Pianist Adam Benjamin (Fender Rhodes) and ECM Recording Artist Peter Epstein (Saxophones), both jazz faculty at the University of Nevada, Reno.

“The seventeen-piece orchestra performance is a musical journey exploring new and innovative directions in jazz music,” said Gary Mayne, Guest Music Director.

The Reno Jazz Orchestra is a 17-piece contemporary big band in Northern Nevada. The band was formed in 1997 by musicians who performed with acts such as Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr. and Natalie Cole in the casino showroom orchestras. Currently, the band is comprised of highly skilled veteran musicians as well as graduates from the University of Nevada, Reno’s jazz program. The Orchestra has recently featured such guest artists as Tom Scott, Kurt Elling, Patti Austin, Ernie Watts, and Dianne Schuur.
