Info for Morandi: Organ Music

Giovanni Morandi is considered to be one of the most important Italian organ composers of the 19th century, alongside Padre Davide da Bergamo, Vincenzo Petrali and Polibio Fumagalli. The family hailed from Bologna: Morandi’s father Pietro, himself an excellent musician, had studied with Padre Martini and was a member of the prestigious Accademia Filarmonica.

Giovanni was born in Pergola - an enclave between Fano and Urbino in the hinterland of Le Marche - in 1777. Pietro had served as master of music at the cathedral there since 1764; in 1778 he secured a similar position at the cathedral in Senigallia, moving his family there and remaining in post until 1811.

Giovanni grew to maturity in Senigallia, receiving his musical education from within the family; he began to travel after taking a wife: in 1804 he married Rosa Morolli, a singer on the threshold of a major career at home and abroad; he remained at Rosa’s side throughout her travels, until her death in 1824. In a famous episode on one of those journeys, in 1810 the Morandi family helped to launch the career of the 18-year-old Gioachino Rossini: Rosa was under contract to the Teatro San Moise in Venice, and prompted the young Rossini to write a new work - La cambiale di Matrimonio – with which Rossini made his debut as an opera composer.

Tied as he was to his wife’s performing schedule, Morandi began to write organ music which Ricordi published in 1808-9: the Milan-based firm had set up in a small way in 1808, and Morandi’s collections - one for organ and one for piano – were among its first publications: Nos. 5 and 6. …
