Viennese jazz pianist Paul Urbanek plays standards that have been familiar for years and yet his solo interpretations on the piano open up new aspects. "I hadn’t seen Glen for almost 30 years, but the familiarity was still there. For a few years, as we both began our lives as professional musicians, our relationship developed into a musical and intellectual partnership. When Glen went back to San Diego, California, we had no contact for almost three decades. Now, both of us moving towards a stage in our lives, where most people end their professional careers, we have the pleasure of making music together again. We started together and we continue together. We now return to our roots, our common language, where heritage, age, gender, etc. make no difference. Within the jazz vocabulary, we have our own dialect, independent of fashions and current trends. We are immediately able to communicate (largely accent-free), even after such a long pause. Reinhardt Winkler, with whom I’ve had the pleasure of playing with for more than ten years, was immediately a perfect fit.
