Info for Kaos

Diederik Wissels was five years old when he first touched a piano keyboard. In 1982, at the end of a four year curriculum, he completed his studies at the world famous Berklee College of Music, in Boston, obtaining the Professional Music diploma with distinction. Kenny Drew (who played with Miles Davis and John Coltrane) and John Lewis (Modern jazz Quartet) were just two of his famous teachers. Since the early eighties, the Dutch pianist Died Erik Wissels is one of the prominent figures of the Brussels jazz scene. In Belgium and elsewhere, critics are impressed by Died Erik Wissels' subtle and highly creative compositions, and by the virtuoso performance he gives at the piano. His style reminds somewhat of Bill Evans, others find it reminiscent of Herbie Hancock, and others again compare the moving melodic quality of his creations to those of Jan Garbarek - yet, in final analysis, all agree that Diederik Wissels is unique. With his music, which is too original for easy categorization, Diederik Wissels has succeeded in amazing, delighting, in one word: winning by storm an ever-larger audience, way beyond devout jazz fanatics.

Both in Belgium and abroad, critics are impressed with the subtlety and the creative imagination of Diederik Wissels’s compositions and with his virtuosity on the piano. Some, he reminds of Bill Evans, others think they can detect an affinity with the style of Herbie Hancock, and still others compare the moving melody of his compositions with the work of Jan Gabarek – to sum up, Diederik Wissels is, in fact, quite unique. With his music that refuses to be classified, Diederik astonishes and fills with wonder: he has conquered an ever greater audience, much wider than just jazz fans.
