The art of sfumato was developed in the Renaissance, especially by Leonardo da Vinci, and adds a new dimension to painting. The use of this technique is all the more mysterious because it cannot be guessed at from a distance. The whole appears uniform and clear; a superimposition of layers with ambiguous boundaries creates an image that looks like a mist. Every detail is embedded in a mist that makes the layers of colour blend together. The blur lies between each line and space, creating a vibration that perfects the cohesion of all the elements. In this way, a particularly unified, dense and coherent whole emerges from all these unclear, fleeting lines. It is in this paradox that the beauty of the artwork can unfold.

Cet Étrange Éclat - a quartet of three low strings plus harpsichord - borrows its name from a poem by Louis Aragon and draws its sound research inspiration from the art of sfumato (blurred) in Leonardo da Vinci's painting. In a programme ranging from Corelli to Jean-Baptiste Barrière, the four young artists, trained in particular by Christophe Coin, employ a wide range of timbres and manage to blend the violone (a large six-string bass viol whose register is similar to that of the double bass), the viola da gamba, the baroque cello and the harpsichord into a homogeneous sound.
