Info for Black Bach (Remastered)
One of Lamont Dozier's true 70s classics – an amazing album of baroque soul with an undeniable groove – kind of the best aspects of Detroit soul, wrapped up together! The arrangements here are fantastic – a mix of strings and soul that surpasses any of Lamont's previous albums, and which holds together perfectly throughout. The whole thing's orchestrated by McKinley Jackson, Gene Page, and Paul Riser, who all do a perfect job of keeping the realness in Lamont's vocals, while expanding the palette of expression to soul classic possibilities! Titles include "All Cried Out", "Let Me Start Tonight", "Put Out My Fire", "Shine", "I Wanna Be With You", and "Thank You For The Dream".
Lamont Dozier’s sophomore solo effort and second release for ABC … Yeah, the pretentious title probably made some folks snicker, and while 1974’s McKinley Jackson produced “Black Bach” may have been completely overlooked by critics and the buying public, song-for-song it made for a killer set. Not only that, but the un-credited cover art was pretty nifty.
Dozier’s writing prowess was certainly no surprise, but listening to this album (or anything in his catalog) and I’m always surprised to hear what a tasty voice the man had. Southern soul slinger (‘I Wanna Be with You’), country-soul storyteller (‘All Cried Out’), sophisticated love man (‘Shine’), or funkster ‘Put Out My Fire’, Dozier had the skills to take on all of these genres. Good place to start exploring his solo catalog.
"A well-sung but uneven album from legendary songwriter Lamont Dozier. Dozier didn't get his momentum going as a solo act until the next album. This was his introductory vehicle, and it served to let him work out the kinks. Everything except the lyrics was first-rate; his vocals, the production, and the arrangements worked, and Dozier sounded convincing on the uptempo tunes and compelling on the ballads."
