Info for Morgenwind

The German-Persian Joolaee Trio is driven by a curiosity for new possibilities of sound and expression with their own instrument, for a musical language beyond conventional genre conventions and musical traditions and for the connection between Orient and Occident. The trio has an innovative line-up with kamancheh, piano and ethnic percussion, and its members have received several awards, including the German Record Critics' Award. Schaghajegh Nosrati is a classically trained pianist and Bach expert, Misagh Joolaee is a kamancheh virtuoso trained in classical Persian music and Sebastian Flaig is a percussionist specialising in jazz, oriental and early music.

The Joolaee Trio has given its debut album the title Morning Wind, after a poem from the Divan by the Persian poet Hafiz (14th century), who is famous in both East and West. Like the morning wind - in Persian poetry it blows from the East, has a fertilising effect, harbours the secrets of lovers and brings spring - the seasonal spring, the Joolaee Trio brings the musical spring by fusing different musical traditions in an original way. For example, the western fugue technique or the Persian Radif repertoire with its melodic figures, ornaments and melismas come into play. The instrumentalists also change roles: The kamancheh, for example, does not function as a melodic instrument throughout, as a string instrument normally would, but sometimes takes on rhythmic-percussive and harmonic parts. The piano is also used melodically, harmonically and percussively. The percussionist, in turn, has melodic and sound-painting tasks in between, especially in the Oriental Fugue, in which the stone marimba, an extremely rarely heard instrument, is used.

With Morgenwind, the Joolaee Trio presents, with the exception of A. Babadjanian's Elégie, the Joolaee Trio presents rousing original compositions for trio or soloists, which in Be Hich Diyar - ‘belonging to no homeland’ - also recall the protests in Iran following the murder of Mahsa Amini by the Islamic regime or, with Marmara Sea, the inland sea with a European north and an Asian south coast - not as something divisive, but as a natural connection between Europe and Asia.
