Info for Franz Liszt Études d'exécution transcendante

A major, iconic figure of the romantic period, the inventor of the piano recital, Franz Liszt, with his twelve Transcendental Études, brought technical virtuosity up to a level never reached before him. Beyond technically challenging the performer, these flamboyant, evocative pages feed on the composer's observation of nature and readings. The fantastic dimension mingles with the idyllic, the epic borders on contemplation and such combined visions foreshadow the music of the future.

Gabriel Stern, piano

Gabriel Stern
began his musical course in Nelly Tasmadjian’s class at the Conservatory of La Ciotat and was soon known for the expressive intensity of his playing and his extraordinary stage presence. This led him to continue his studies at Marseille’s CRR with Anne-Marie Ghirardelli until June 2011, when he won first Prize for Piano. Then he received his musical training for five years at The Geneva HEM (Haute École de Musique) in Cédric Pescia’s class. Following his Bachelor of Arts and Concert Master’s degrees at HEM, he went on with his piano courses and trained with Eliso Virsaladze at Fondazione Scuola di Musica di Fiesole, where he had undertaken his postgraduate studies. He subsequently registered with status as Soloist Master’s degree student at Geneva’s HEM, where he is currently attending a further training course with Nelson Goerner.

Gabriel was given the opportunities to work with several outstanding artists from the music world, including Pavel Nersessian, Philippe Cassard, Jean-Marc Luisada, Konstantin Lifschitz, Jacques Rouvier and Racha Arodaky, during masterclasses in France and Switzerland. Gabriel is a laureate of such international contests as the International Piano competition of Montrond les Bains, in the Concert Grand Prize category, where he was awarded the first prize in 2012, and the Tenth Adilia Alieva International Piano Competition, where he won the first prize for virtuosity.

His first recording dedicated to Bach’s Goldberg Variations was published under the Lyrinx label in Spring 2019. Receiving enthusiastic reviews from the press, notably Classica and Diapason, the record is named “Disc of the Day” in En Pistes !, a programme on the French radio France Musique – highly praising the interpret’s “concentration, intellect and overarching vision”.
