Info for cold/mess

Three years after his debut album shot him to global attention, fast-rising international artist Prateek Kuhad has released a new surprise EP. Called ‘cold/mess’.

Written primarily in Kuhad’s hometown of New Delhi and recorded in Nashville, ‘cold/mess’ is a dazzling introduction to a musician on the precipice of global recognition. Hailed as “one of the country’s leading singer-songwriters” by Rolling Stone India, Kuhad has been on a meteoric rise since releasing his 2015 debut ‘In Tokens and Charms’ – he took home an MTV Europe Music Award, earned Indie Album of the Year honors from iTunes, captured 1st place in the prestigious International Songwriting Competition (which helped launch artists like Gotye and Passenger to global audiences), toured with artists like Alt-J and Mike Posner in addition to selling out his own amphitheater dates, and when he landed in Austin for the first time, NPR selected Kuhad as an “Artist to Watch” among the thousands slated to showcase at SXSW.

After signing an American publishing deal with the LA-based Cutcraft Music (home to Nick Murphy, Izzy Bizu, and CP Dubb), Kuhad began taking regular trips to the States for writing sessions, where he eventually met Nashville-based producers/songwriters Konrad Snyder and Peter Groenwald. Kuhad signed them on to produce his EP (his first time collaborating with outside producers) after two successful writing sessions proved them to be an ideal fit for capturing his sound – an arresting blend of organic folk intimacy and lush pop appeal, calling to mind artists like the Tallest Man on Earth or The Head and The Heart but filtered through Kuhad’s own uniquely global perspective.

‘cold/mess’ explores the deeper truths of shared human experience via the varying stages of love in all its ecstasy and agony. Ranging from heartbreakingly sparse to tenaciously resolute, each track is accompanied by its own unique artwork in a series of stunning photographs that feeds into – and off of – the music. “Relationships can be very dichotomous,” says Kuhad. “They can be comforting and amazing and chaotic and suffocating all at once, and I wanted these songs to capture those extremes. Every song has a color to me – I wanted each track to have its own visual identity so that the images and the music could all combine to tell the story of this collection. They all work together to tell a bigger story about love, heartache, angst, and conflict.”
