Info for Apollo & Marsyas
"Pitiful indeed—most pitiful—was the fate of the satyr Marsyas." (Ovid, „Metamorphoses“) Apollo versus Marsyas—a musical contest pushed to its ultimate limits. On its new GENUIN album, the German-Spanish ensemble Marsyas Baroque transforms this ancient myth into a compelling musical narrative: an instrumental pasticcio that follows the unfolding story, interwoven with brief spoken texts that illuminate key moments along the way. Performed on historical instruments, works by Vivaldi, Telemann, Gesualdo, Reichenauer, and others enter into dialogue with a newly commissioned composition by Alessandra Bellino. Who decides the outcome of a contest over music itself? The answer is as unsettling as it is unforgettable.

Marsyas Baroque
With a keen sense of contemporary relevance, context, and artistic dialogue, the four-member ensemble Marsyas Baroque (Paula Pinn, María Carrasco Gil, Konstanze Waidosch und Sara Johnson Huidobro) creates bold, conceptually driven programs with early music. The musicians devote themselves to chamber music of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries on period instruments and in their own arrangements. In addition, the ensemble collaborates with contemporary composers and develops interdisciplinary formats with guests from music, theater, dance, literature, and visual art.
Marsyas Baroque performs throughout Europe and is a regular guest at renowned festivals. In 2024, the ensemble’s debut album featuring suites by François Dieupart and Johann Sebastian Bach was released to broad international acclaim.
The German-Spanish ensemble was founded in 2019 in connection with the Deutscher Musikwettbewerb, where it received a scholarship from the Deutscher Musikrat, admission to the Konzerte Junger Künstler concert series, and the special prize of the Ensemble Academy Freiburg. Shortly thereafter, Marsyas Baroque won first prize at the Biagio Marini Competition.
