Info for Exposition
Pianist Louis Philippson inspires his generation with emotional and virtuoso videos on social media in favour of classical music. For his debut album ‘Exposition’, he pursues the same idea and combines his own compositions with new arrangements of well-known melodies from classical works as well as anime and pop songs.
He juxtaposes self-written, epic pieces such as ‘Supernova’ and the large-scale orchestrated ‘C'est toi’ with his reduced piano miniatures such as ‘Paulette’, ‘Memories of Moldau’ and ‘Dragon's Lullaby’. Louis Philippson complements his own compositions with fresh, colourful arrangements of melodies from various genres. Following Duke Ellington's motto that there is ‘only good or bad music’, he combines a poetic piano version of ‘OMG’ by the K-pop band NewJeans with a dynamic arrangement of Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto, creates elegiac piano versions of melodies from Mahler's Symphony of a Thousand or ‘In Trutina’ from Carl Orff's Carmina Burana, and plays Puccini's ‘O mio babbino caro’ accompanied by a cello.
He also plays anime classics such as ‘A Town with an Ocean View’ and ‘Lover's Oath’ on the grand piano. Philippson says of his debut album: ‘The creation of “Exposition” was an incredible journey. I wanted to create an album where I could combine all the genres that inspire me. There are so many great melodies to rediscover on the piano. My goal is to inspire my generation with the beauty of piano music in a new way.’
Long before his TikTok career, Louis Philippson was discovered on YouTube at the age of seven by his future piano teacher, a professor at the Robert Schumann Hochschule in Düsseldorf. He later became a junior student there and took part in numerous national and international piano competitions, including the prestigious Bach Competition, which he won. During the pandemic in 2022, Louis Philippson launched his TikTok channel and has been inspiring Gen Z with vlogs, humour and impressive piano performances ever since.
His posts have now reached over 750,000 followers. Philippson has already worked with a large number of artists from different genres. These include concert pianist Martin Stadtfeld, violinist and influencer Esther Abrami and Italian TikTok pianist Gabriele Bagnati. A particular highlight of his collaborations was working with the singer Teya Dora on an acoustic version of her worldwide Top 50 hit ‘Dzanum’.
