Info for do Albert Mangelsdorff
Albert Mangelsdorff is primarily known as an instrumentalist and improviser - a band project posthumously dedicated explicitly to his compositions has not existed until now. ToneGallery would like to close this gap and has creatively edited and rearranged selected compositions.
ToneGallery deliberately dedicates itself to Mangelsdorff's compositions without direct reference to his instrument, so there will be no trombone - just as there was no piano in the homage to Tristano.
In this way, a new perspective on the music of the exceptional trombonist emerges, which pays tribute to his legacy and at the same time bears the signature of ToneGallery.
"I think that only when you can spontaneously use all possibilities, you are really free. I wouldn't want to miss free jazz even today. But I don't want to go into a ghetto, I want to use all the possibilities that jazz offers today...", said Germany's most famous trombonist, Albert Mangelsdorff, in 1993.
A quote that gives an idea of the wide range of his musical work. This is exactly what the quartet "ToneGallery" around Steffen Weber (saxophone), Bastian Ruppert (guitar), Hans Glawischnig (double bass) and Holger Nesweda (drums) pays tribute to. At the same time, the band is closing a musical gap with their album "Do Albert Mangelsdorff". "Albert Mangelsdorff is primarily known as an instrumentalist and improviser. A band project dedicated posthumously to his compositions has never existed before," Steffen Weber underlines. Together with his three fellow musicians, he has creatively edited and rearranged selected compositions by the exceptional trombonist.
Courage and creativity - the quartet has retained these virtues on its follow-up album. Guitarist Bastian Ruppert speaks of a musical symbiosis: "Our album pays tribute to Mangelsdorff's legacy and at the same time bears the signature of ToneGallery. Typical jazz - the past inspires the new!"
"The sound effects achieved by the great quartet ...seem like finely polished sound gems from Mangelsdorff's original raw material" (Wolfgang Sandner, F.A.Z.)
