Info for Auf den Spuren von Julius Kosleck
To mark the 200th anniversary of Julius Kosleck's birth, this recording presents a wide variety of his works, those for solo cornet and piano, for piano solo, his arrangements from known compositions for cornet quartet, for brass ensemble and ‘Trumpet Music’ (compositions for various sized brass ensemble). The selection of music by Helen Barsby is representative of the development of brass chamber music in 19th century Berlin and presents the life and work of the most important Berlin trumpeter of the time.
Ulius Kosleck (1825–1905), "Royal Chamber Musician" and professor of trumpet, was one of the most interesting trumpeters of the 19th century and, as such, was nationally and internationally renowned. He worked in Berlin for sixty years as a trumpeter, cornetist, composer, arranger, music historian, lecturer, and, finally, conductor. As a cornet virtuoso, he performed in Germany, England, Russia, and the USA.

Helen Barsby
emigrated to Europe as a 21 year old, looking for larger horizons, and wanting to touch base with the source of european baroque music and the current early music scene. She settled in Berlin in 2004, drawn by the cultural legacy and the vibrancy of Germany's fast evolving cultural capital.
Helen Barsby grew up in Dunedin, New Zealand, studied trumpet at the School of Music, University of Victoria, Wellington, at the University of Music and Performing Arts, Frankfurt am Main, and at the Royal Conservatory, The Hague, Netherlands. Based in Berlin, she now plays almost exclusively in the early music scene, with a repertoire ranging from early Baroque to modern compositions for early instruments. In addition to performing with renowned orchestras such as the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin, Lautten Compagney Berlin and the Batzdorfer Hofkapelle, Helen can regularly be heard in Berlin as a member of the ensemble capellavitalisberlin, and with Aris&Aulis. She has appeared on over 40 CDs and radio productions, and most of all enjoys making new recordings of old masters. A passionate teacher, she is a founding member of the Freie Musikschule Tiergarten, she teaches trumpet for all levels from beginners, to students and professionals. She is also a certified Iyengar Yoga teacher, practising and teaching yoga.
Her current focus is on music from nineteenth century Berlin, which involves research, collecting historic instruments, and performing brass chamber music. 2025 marks the 200th anniversary of Julius Kosleck (1825-1905), one of Berlin's, indeed Germany's key trumpeters. Helen produced a CD recording (release date May 2025) devoted to presenting the works of Kosleck. Concerts follow.
