Info for Days on Earth

“The day we embarked on the recording of Days On Earth, 13th December 2017, I had been on Earth for 20,711 days. This also means that I’ve been on Earth for 2,958 weeks, 680 months, 497,000 hours, 30 million minutes and not far shy of 2 billion seconds. This record is a culmination of many of those experiences over the 2 billion seconds that I’ve been eating, sleeping, thinking, playing and composing music. Music is intrinsically connected to life, love and joy.”

I started writing the six movements of this piece in 2016 and in December 2017 recorded the music with a specially selected orchestra and five of my favourite improvisers at Mark Knofler's famous British Grove studios. Days On Earth features old and new friends who I’ve collaborated and developed close musical relationships over the years including Seb Rochford (drums) Liam Noble (piano) Tom Herbert (bass) Roland Sutherland (flutes) John Parricelli (guitar) and Laura Jurd (trumpet). I also asked the young alto sax player Alice Leggett to join us who has a very special way of improvising but also plays the melodies with me in a very beautiful way. The strings very led by the incredible Jackie Shave who is also featured soloist on one of the tracks. I've been told Days On Earth is 'epic' and I guess it is but its also a very personal musical statement for me both as a musician and a human being.

Lockheart’s eclectic tastes are all here, from cutting edge improvising to Bollywood strings, African Kora harp melodies and 70’s funk. Structured rather like a ‘grand suite’ the six movements are inspired by human traits and tendencies - a subtle comment on the state of our world and humanity"
