Georg Danzer
Biography Georg Danzer
Georg Danzer
Born in Vienna on October 7, 1946, and passing away on June 21, 2007, Georg Danzer was one of the outstanding singer-songwriters—and not just in Austria. He owed this status not only to his critical and incisive lyrics but also to his personal authenticity. He always looked beneath the surface and never shied away from setting uncomfortable truths to music.
He began his music career in 1967, initially working as a lyricist for numerous artists, including well-known names such as Marianne Mendt, Erika Pluhar, and André Heller.
As Austrian dialect music gained popularity, Danzer began writing his own lyrics in the local dialect.
He released his first single, "Tschik" (Cigarette), without any indication of the singer or lyricist on the record.
The year 1976 proved to be a particularly successful one for the artist: following his marriage in 1975, his daughter Daniela was born, and he was named "Star of the Year" by the trade magazine *Music Week*.
From that point on, Georg Danzer was firmly established in the industry, yet his lyrics remained uncompromising, critical, and profound. This period saw the creation of songs like "Freiheit" (Freedom), with lyrics and melodies that truly get under the listener's skin. This quality characterizes many of his songs and is the foundation of his enduring success.
Another milestone in his career was the successful "Georg Danzer Tour '79." Danzer consistently captivated audiences because his lyrics rang true; nothing about his work ever seemed contrived or driven by a desire for profit.
Throughout his career, the artist also participated in other projects, such as the group Austria 3. In April 2000, he became chairman of the organization "SOS Mitmensch" for a two-year term.
On June 21, 2007, this exceptional artist passed away following a severe illness. Always true to himself, Georg Danzer had declined the offer of a state funeral prior to his death.
