Christian Gerhaher
first completed his medical studies in Munich. He also studied singing, both privately and as a guest, at the Munich University of Music and Performing Arts, as well as in courses with Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, and Inge Borkh. Opera engagements have taken him to the Frankfurt Opera, the Teatro Real in Madrid, the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in London, the Vienna State Opera, the Deutsche Oper and the Berlin State Opera, the Zurich Opera House, the Metropolitan Opera in New York, and the Salzburg Festival. His repertoire currently includes roles such as the Count and Figaro (Le nozze di Figaro), Don Alfonso (Così fan tutte), Rodrigo (Don Carlo), Wolfram (Tannhäuser), Amfortas (Parsifal), and the title roles in Orfeo, Don Giovanni, Simon Boccanegra, and Wozzeck. A particular focus of his work is lieder and concert singing. Together with his duo partner, pianist Gerold Huber, he heads the Lied Department at the Munich University of Music and Performing Arts. In 2015, he was named a Bavarian Kammersänger. In the 2023/24 season, he performed at the Bavarian State Opera as Amfortas and Wolfram, as well as Golaud in the new production of Pelléas et Mélisande, and in a Festival Lieder recital.
