Info for Reflections on Becoming

“Reflections of Becoming” is the debut album by Latvian drummer and composer Dāvids Eglītis, currently residing in the Netherlands. It is a 7-part jazzsuite, in his own words, "exploring the concept of time in all of its facets".

Dāvids Eglītis was a 16 years old Latvian kid, practicing the drums, when he came across the music of Chet Baker, Bill Evans and John Coltrane (and more specifically his drummer : Elvin Jones). A few years later, Dāvids found himself in the Netherlands, at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague. There he studied with Dutch drum legend Eric Ineke and met with his current bandmembers.

Eglītis draws on a diverse pool of inspiration – from modern heroes Joel Ross and Immanuel Wilkins, through classical masters Mahler and Tchaikovsky, to the spirituality of Coltrane. He is known for blending his deep appreciation of straight ahead jazz with contemporary influences. His playing is mostly inspired by giants like Elvin Jones, Jeff “Tain” Watts, Eric Harland as well as young and upcoming drummers like Kweku Sumbry and Jeremy Dutton.

Dāvids has a strong original voice, showcasing a remarkable dynamic range. As one can hear on “Reflections of Becoming”. The album can be seen as a ‘coming of age’ piece of art. The album is a 7-part suite, a personal story about hardship and learning to move forward.

The suite is brought to life by an ensemble comprising of top-tier Netherlands-based jazz talent, and most importantly close friends on and off the bandstand: Claudio Jr. de Rosa (IT) – saxophones, Enrico Le Noci (IT) – guitar, Daniel Bulatkin (CZ) – piano & Arjun Ramdas (IN) – double bass.
