Info for Get What You Deserve

Die zehn knackigen Songs aus Blues, Detroit-Soul und Funk reichen von Bobby Blands »Ain't No Love In The Heart of the City« bis hin zu James Browns ›You Can Have Watergate«.

Sweetpea Atkinson
When Sweetpea Atkinson was discovered singing at a Detroit UAW Hall in 1978, he had already led a storied life working as a bodyguard, assembly line laborer and a few other things that cannot be mentioned on the grounds that it would definitely incriminate him...

Just young enough to have missed the era of great soul shouters like his heroes Bobby Blue Bland and Marvin Jr. of The Dells, he was ironically too old to be lumped-in with the smoother, higher-pitched soul stylists that became popular in the early 80's like Prince and Rick James. Fortunately, he found a niche for himself - gaining notoriety as the lead singer of the Detroit soul/funk outfit, Was (Not Was).. True fans of the band will recall that Sweetpea made his songwriting debut on the track WHAT UP, DOG, for which he penned the reflective, autobiographical lines:
Excuse me for Pimpin
I didn't mean no harm
Was just tryin to get some money
So I could buy a farm

Moving to LA in the early 90's, he launched an illustrious studio career - performing on recordings for Bonnie Raitt, Lyle Lovett, Willie Nelson, Bob Dylan, Bob Seger, Iggy Pop, Solomon Burke, Michael McDonald, Walter Becker, Keb Mo, Jimmy Smith, Mitch Ryder, Marc Cohn, Ivan Neville, Richie Sambora, Taj Mahal, Kris Kristofferson, Brian Wilson, Jackson Browne, Cheb Khaled and George Jones. For the last two decades he has recorded and toured as lead vocalist with Randy Jacobs and the Boneshakers. He has also been a beloved member of Lyle Lovett's touring band since 1998.

30 years after the release of his only other solo album, Sweetpea has teamed up with Producer and Blues Legend Keb Mo to craft a timeless R&B album that could launch Mr. Atkinson to the top echelons of the Chitlin Circuit - if only such a thing still existed in 2016!

Says Keb:

"Sweetpea is a man of charisma and style. He is one of the last great R&B soul singers. They don't make'em like that anymore. Sweetpea is a timeless talent who's greatly respected by his peers".

Sweetpea and Keb have made a record that will strike a welcome note of comfortable familiarity for fans of traditional R&B and come as a breath of fresh air for the previously uninitiated.
