Nordic Brass Ensemble
The Nordic Brass Ensemble was founded in 1993 by a group of brass musicians who felt inspired to make chamber music together.
The ensemble has, since its beginning, focussed greatly on developing its own musical ideas and concepts of sound. By thoroughly exploring all the different instruments’ special qualities, combining them in new and unusual ways, as well as extensively using mutes, special instruments and percussion to create new colours and effects, the ensemble continuously develops the distinct sound of NBE.
NBE has a vast repertoire, spanning from the renaissance to our own time. Early music has always been an important part of that repertoire, and the ensemble is soon to release a CD containing only music from this period.
Most of the repertoire is arranged exclusively for the ensemble by NBE members Hans Petter Stangnes, Erik Eilertsen and Stian Aareskjold.
The musicians of NBE live in different parts of Scandinavia, and meet for projects about twice a year. NBE performs regularly in the Nordic countries, and has in recent years also visited Germany, Italy, Austria, Spain and Bolivia.
NBE normally consists of 11 musicians; 4 trumpets, 4 trombones, horn, tuba and percussion.
