Info zu Antonín Dvořák: Slavonic Dances Op. 46 & Op. 72 (Remastered)

The principal merit of these sixteen reinvented Slavonic Dances is their respect of rhythms and often complicated figures, as well as their inexhaustible vitality. For more than a century, they were played in orchestral versions thus falling within the preferred repertoire of spa orchestras. Today, this double cycle, is being discovered in the original four-hand piano original writing. Each of the dances is based on a precise rhythm and/or figure that gives greater importance to the Czech heritage in the Opus 46 (furiant, sousedká, skočná…). In the Opus 72, composed under “constraint and by force… when he had not the slightest desire to write music like that at the time”, Dvořák expanded new horizons. This ‘dance suite’ no longer forms a simple diversion, genre music for beer halls and cabarets, but a cycle constructed by alternating excitement, dream, pastorale and even boasting a conclusion. This succession of rustic scenes stylises ‘the spirit of a race’, providing sketches as precise as they are seemingly unpretentious about an art of living.

"Zdenka and Martin Hršel render all the savour and variety of the rhythms without pouring out their hearts. There is nothing flashy, affected or exaggerated in this version that sounds both folk-like and highly refined but, above all, thoroughly natural. The harshness of certain themes is not toned down, and the expressivity always remains warm. The Hršels, both students of Ivan Moravec, manage to sing in their family tree with a single voice." (Le Monde de la Musique, January 2001)
