Info zu From The Heart

“Should [imaginative art] not come from the heart as well as the brain?” Samuel Coleridge‐Taylor, 1911

This poignant question—posed by Coleridge‐Taylor just months before his death— encapsulates the emotional core of Sabi Ensemble’s debut album, From The Heart. The SABI ENSEMBLE, founded in 2024 by historical bassist Carina Cosgrave, is committed to reviving works by composers whose work has been unjustly forgotten and placing this music from the margins centre stage.

The programme celebrates two 150th anniversaries and is the first time Coleridge-Taylor’s music has been recorded on period instruments. The album features two of Samuel Coleridge-Taylor’s expressive Novelletten - rarely heard works arranged by the SABI ENSEMBLE that reveal his sharp craft and lyrical voice; his Nonet - a student composition which cemented his status as a breathtaking composer at the young age of 18; and Louise Farrenc’s Nonet - a powerful piece written at the height of her career. After the death of her daughter, Farrenc ceased composing—her creative life halted by grief.

Carina Cosgrave
grew up in Bromley, South East London and has the many mentors and musicians she met there for starting her on her musical journey.

The first instrument she remembers playing was a bright red recorder, but after dabbling with the guitar, piano and flute (yes, it might’ve been…) she found herself at a school with a double bass and a music teacher who needed someone to sit behind it in orchestra, and, here we are.

Carina studied her Bachelors at the Royal College of Music London with double bassist Peter Buckoke, a teacher who inspires her still. Her postgraduate diploma also from the RCM, was made possible with the support of the Hilda and Douglas Simmons award.

Over her career Carina has worked across many different styles of music working with many artists including Lemar, and Massive Attack, performing in festivals, in theatres including a number of productions at the Shakespeare‘s Globe and she has performed with orchestras such as the BBC Symphony Orchestra, RTE Symphony Orchestra, and the City of London Sinfonia.

It was her passion for historical performance and the sounds and colours of historical instruments which finally led her to leave London. She studied at the Koninklijk Conservatorium in The Hague with Maggie Urquhart specialising in historical bass instruments and Violone. Since receiving her Masters Carina has gone on to be a sought after player with groups all over the world, and she has toured extensively with ensembles including Les Siécles, Vox Luminis, L’orchestre des Champs-Élysées, Dunedin Consort, The English Concert, The Gabrieli Consort and Players, Apollos Fire, The Orchestra of The Age of Enlightenment, Florilegium, La Serenissima and the London Handel Orchestra.

Her playing can be heard on a number of recordings, most recently with the Channel Classics label with Florilegium, Chandos with Ensemble Odyssee, Avie Records with La Serenissima and Linn records playing with Dunedin Consort and Ensemble Marsyas.

Recently Carina has been awarded a grant by Arts Council England to develop her creative practice. 2024 will see Carina researching and performing lesser known music with the Sabi Ensemble, from a historical performance perspective.
