Anstatt denselben Weg einzuschlagen, forderte sie ihren Stil heraus und erfand ihn neu - mit einer Folk-Fusion, die ihresgleichen sucht. Dieser innovative Sound erreichte einen unvergleichlichen klanglichen Höhepunkt und nahm auf dem mit Gold ausgezeichneten Album Hejira [1976], der mit Gold ausgezeichneten Doppel-LP Don Juan's Reckless Daughter [1977], ihrer Zusammenarbeit mit Charles Mingus mit dem Titel Mingus [1979] und dem Live-Album Shadows and Light [1980] Gestalt an. Mit Joni Mitchell Archives, Vol. 4: The Asylum Years (1976-1980), das am 4. Oktober 2024 erscheint, vertieft sie den Nervenkitzel und die Aufregung dieser Platten noch weiter in diese Zeit.

Dieses umfassende und unverzichtbare Set umspannt eine der produktivsten Perioden ihrer sagenumwobenen Karriere. Es enthält beeindruckende Live-Tracks aus ihrer Zeit in Bob Dylans Rolling Thunder Revue während der Tournee durch die Vereinigten Staaten 1975 und 1976. Der Vorhang der Musik wird gelüftet, indem frühe Aufnahmen und alternative Takes aus den jeweiligen Sessions für Hejira, Don Juan's Reckless Daughter und Mingus gezeigt werden. Sie berichtet über das Bread & Roses Festival und die Anti-Nuclear Rally. Vol. 4 schließlich dokumentiert ihre Tournee von 1979 und enthält sogar zwei Tracks von den Tour-Proben in jenem Jahr. Ganz zu schweigen davon, dass sie ihre Vielseitigkeit und Anpassungsfähigkeit unter Beweis stellt, indem sie mit jedem zusammenarbeitet, von Herbie Hancock und Jaco Pastorious bis Wayne Shorter und Pat Metheny.

Vol. 4 enthält bisher unveröffentlichtes Material von Original-Stereo-Rollen, Kassetten, CD-Rs, Nagra-Filmaufnahmen und sogar einer Radiosendung. Neu abgemischte Tracks stammen von Mehrspurbändern, während eine Handvoll hochauflösender digitaler Tracks aus den Bob Dylan Archives stammt.
