Info zu From Europe With Jazz
There are lots of surprises on this 1972 production. It’s a potpourri of “live” festival big bands with some of the greatest jazz musicians of the time. First off, the Nordic All-Stars. Danish composer-trumpeter Palle Mikkelborg’s composition “Salamanderdans” demonstrates why he is one of jazz’s great contemporary composers. On the piece, Norwegian saxophonist Jan Garbarek of ECM fame is surrounded by the best from the North. Ear-opening early Garbarek. Poland’s Novi Singers follow. On “Next Please”, a scintillating mixture of modern and experimental illustrate why they have attained cult status. Next, the Zurich International Festival All-Stars, read like a who’s who of European and American jazz. Dexter Gordon, Don Byas, Art Farmer, and Albert Mangelsdorff are just a few of the greats. George Grunz’s arrangement of Ornette Coleman’s “Lonely Woman” creates a symphonic hue to this classic ballad. Lastly, “Sigo’s Garden” an extravagant piece of greenery as Boško Petrović & the Non-convertible Eastern All-Stars race through the undergrowth. The music sounds as fresh today as it was then.
