Info zu Stories of Stonia
Estonian folk singer and multi-instrumentalist Mari Kalkun is about to release her album Stories of Stonia, rooted in ancient Estonian mythology, and inspired by the Estonian landscape, but aimed at a modern audience whose relationship to the Earth is deeply fraught. Her new single is “'Munamäe loomine,” or “The Creation of Egg Hill,” and is based on the idea that the world was created from the egg of a magic bird. Creation is the theme here – the song has a creative arrangement that surrounds Kalkun’s voice with timeless-sounding electronic drones as well as traditional instruments like the kannel (a type of table harp), but it also suggests the idea that we are all creators of the world that we will live in.
With a voice that seems to speak to us from the heart of the Estonian forest, Mari Kalkun’s music is at once of a place and deeply personal. Rooted in ancient Estonian and Võru traditions, but beautifully fresh and contemporary, Stories of Stonia reaches back to very old layers of tradition to imagine what Mari’s ancestors would have thought and sung about the world in an era of skyscraper, steel and metal. Throughout the album’s nine songs, Mari explores humanity’s controversial relationship with nature with powerfully emotive musical backdrops. One of Northern Europe’s most important folk singers Mari has created a mysterious and magical album.
